Obituary

Lorilee Schumacher, retired innkeeper of Middlebury’s Country Victorian Bed & Breakfast, passed away on Thursday, December 23, 2021 in Goshen, Indiana.

Born May 3, 1958 in South Bend to Constance and Leon Clough, Lori brought so much joy to the people around her throughout her life.  Married in 1982 to Arnold F. Schumacher, an officer in the United States Air Force, Lori dedicated much of her time to raising their three children.  This always included volunteering in almost every capacity imaginable: working in the local schools, leading Girl Scout troops and training other leaders, and participating in various military and community organizations.  She was an asset to every community she ever belonged to, and she made friends wherever she went.  A woman of many talents, Lori could sew, quilt, or knit just about anything you could dream up.  But her claim to fame was undoubtedly her delicious cooking.  Her scrumptious breakfasts brought many repeat guests to the inn on Main Street in Middlebury once she took ownership in 2005.  Her friends and family were always equally spoiled with delights from her kitchen.  She loved being a grandmother and got much joy from her Scottish terrier, Titus.  Lori was one of the most generous souls with her time, love, and gifts.  In addition to her duties as innkeeper at the Country Victorian, Lori served as a caregiver for Firefly Home Care, and she volunteered weekly delivering for Meals on Wheels through The Window in Goshen.  Her roles as eldest sibling, dedicated mother and grandmother, loving wife, caring friend, and hospitable innkeeper meant that everyone always had more than they needed when in her care - and she cared for many, many people in her 63 years of life.

Lori is survived by her loving husband, Arnie; her children, Adam, Lorin, and Amanda; her daughter-in law, Jill; and her son-in-law, Kaleb; as well as two beautiful, sweet grandchildren, Wren and Rylan.  Her younger siblings, Lisa, Leon, and Jeffery also survive her, as well as countless friends and family.  Lori’s presence will be greatly missed, but her essence will remain in the hearts of so many forever.

It was Lori’s wish to be cremated, and a memorial/celebration of life will be held later in the year for family and friends.
